b beats headphones What are the odds of them keeping me

Congrats! I was a seasonal as of earlier today. I got laid off though. I’m so bummed out about it though. I really need some advice right now, that’s why I’m here. I have no clue what to do. Let me tell you my story first. I’ll try to condense it as much as possible though.

I’m 17 years old. I’m a Senior in high school. I’m in the early release program so I get out of school at 12:00pm. I’m required to get at least 14 hours a week. I was working at a pizza place but I just couldn’t do that anymore and it’s always (I know as stupid as this sounds.) been my dream to work at best buy. So I had applied in May, July, and again in September. I had gotten an interview every time I applied. In May and July I would have been kept as part time. But in September it was seasonal only. but I didn’t care, I just wanted to work there so bad. So after the interview with the GM they put me in BBY Mobile. aka Cellphones. Is anyone seeing anything wrong with this picture?

YOU MUST BE 18 TO SIGN CELLPHONE CONTRACTS. Therefore I couldn’t work in BBY Mobile. I was in Mobile for two weeks not knowing this and the hiring manager comes to me and says, “look there’s no easy way to say this but., you can’t work in this department anymore. You’re too young. I had recommended you to operations for that exact reason.” So I wasn’t mad or anything and I understood. now. Good thing was though, that my manager from mobile comes and finds me and says that the day I turn 18 that he’ll take me back. So that’s good.

By this point it’s mid to late October. I was literally getting 0 hours a week. But I wasn’t complaining, I still had a job. A place holder if you will. So he was trying to work with me. So that was nice. I was pretty much thrown on him. I wasn’t getting very many hours in the beginning and the hours I was getting he sent me home early simply because he didn’t have enough labor hours to give. selling just like the other part timers. Well my boss had a little competition in our department. Who could ever sell 4 beats by dre or bose headphone in one shift got a 20 dollar gift card. I did it 3 times. I was declared the “beats kings”. Nobody could beat me. One of my co workers sold 4 in one day. I came back that same day and sold 5. So we were tied for a minute.

At this point I’m working 45 hours a week and it’s late December. My boss hands me my evaluation sheet asking if I’d like to stay. I, of course, put yes. So one week later I’m looking in TLC at my schedule and my hours are taken down to 12. Well, that’s normal. Everyone was getting that. But then this week comes around and I’m looking at next week which extends to the 15. Which for those of you who are not BBY employees, that’s like D day. That’s the end of the seasonal position. But anyways, I’m looking at next weeks schedule and I have zero hours from today til the 15th. So I go ask my boss, “Is today my last day?” And he looks very puzzle he says, “I’m not sure, I’m going to have to ask some people.”

So he finds me later in the day and sits me down and talks to me. To sum up what he said, he was saying that he just can’t keep me because there aren’t enough hours to give. He said that he could give me only like 4 hours a week and that just wouldn’t work out. I agreed. He said if anything opens up he’ll call me right away and that he would definitely keep me in his thoughts. He used the term re hirable when he was talking about it. He said, drop by every month and see. I thanked him for him keeping me in his thoughts for rehiring and I also thanked him for working me while he did. I closed up the store, laser lining everything to perfection, and went home.

But now it comes to the whole reason why I’m typing this. I need some advice about what to do next. I am required to have a job because of the work program I am in. So I have to get another job anyway I slice it. But here’s the deal. My sister works right down the street at olive garden. She said that she may be able to get me a job there, but like any job, there’s no guarantees. But here’s the thing. What if I were to get the job and best buy calls me back? I can’t just quit. I have to be loyal to that employer b/c not only would it make me look real crappy but also my sister. I’d go back to best buy in a heartbeat. My dream is to become a manager there one day. So you can imagine how crushed and torn I am right now. I bet you guys are like, why don’t you go back to the pizza place? One because they don’t rehire and I’d probably end up leaving them again for best buy anyways.

Really Olive Garden seems like my only option at the moment. It’s impossible to get a job anywhere else right now, ask me how I know. I applied EVERYWHERE else before I got that pizza job. Maybe it’s easier now but for some reason I’m highly doubting it. I don’t know what to do. Where should I go? How long will it take for a position to free up at best buy? I feel like best buy is perfect for me and it’s hard for me to image myself anywhere else. Should I just try to forget about best buy and embrace some new? Should I just find a job that I can have at my disposal (fast food)? Should I wait until this summer, when I turn 18, to take up the mobile manager’s offer? Or should I just not do the work program at all and go back in school full time? I’ll take any suggestions.

Thanks in advanced for commenting and reading my rather lengthy story but I felt like it was necessary for you guys to know in order to give me some good advice. Let me know if you have any questions.

Since you’re not even 18 and out of school, you have plenty of options. It might not hurt to go back full time to school but if you need the money then stay in the work program. If going to school full time would help you later go to college, that might give you the most future options.

If it were me and I needed a job I’d take whichever job the first one you can get which would likely be the fast food job and then if another job opened after school ended then work it also. It never hurts to have two jobs.

If you have a job of some kind you can still go back to that manager and say you would still like to work there even on a limited basis an off shift that is hard to fill or as back up if someone calls in sick or to cover vacations, etc. If there’s anyway to keep your foot in the door, you should.
