Bush announced on Tuesday that she would resign effective Jan. 1 after making negative comments about the mayor to The Palm Beach Post.
Bush sudden departure was a surprise to the mayor, who earlier Thursday said she still expected Bush to leave on Jan. 1.
Mayor Jeri Muoio told the Post earlier that former Assistant Police Chief Dennis Crispo, who retired last week, is her No. 1 choice to serve as interim chief. Crispo said he hasn been contacted by Muoio yet, but confirmed that he interested in the job.
But with Bush sudden departure, Muoio later said that she confident with Kummerlen and Santos Olsen running the department, and she unsure whether Crispo will become interim chief or the department will keep the two assistants in charge until a full time chief is named.
Muoio said a nationwide search will begin shortly, and that both internal and external candidates will be considered.
The city commission has to approve the mayor appointee. Commissioner Bill Moss said he would prefer an in house candidate, while Commissioners Kimberly Mitchell and Sylvia Moffett have said all candidates should be considered, but they would prefer hiring someone from outside.
