FAIRBANKS Kodiak Jack’s and Boomtown Bar and Grill, two of Fairbanks’ most high profile bars that share a building on the corner of Airport Way and Gaffney Road, are now off limits to all active duty personnel stationed at Fort Wainwright.

Garrison Commander Col. Sean Fisher signed the order on Wednesday, which will remain in effect until the Armed Forces Disciplinary Control Board considers the matter and provides a recommendation.

Last November, Kodiak Jack’s was identified as a nuisance property by the Fairbanks Police Department, citing an inordinate number of police calls to the venue.

Owner Rick Mensik has previously stated that 80 percent of his clientele is military and that his bar benefits the community because it gives personnel a consolidated place to go.

According to Danielle O’Donnell, chief of community relations at Fort Wainwright, no single incident prompted Fisher’s decision.

The first Mensik heard about his bar being banned was Wednesday morning. He’s not worried about business, but he doesn’t think the decision will alleviate problems. “I think it’s a mistake for the other bars in town, and it seems shortsighted. I’m worried about other clubs absorbing the customers,” he said.

Between Oct. 24, 2016 and Oct. 24, 2017, Fairbanks police visited Kodiak Jack’s on 139 occasions, nearly half of which were self initiated bar checks. Mensik maintains that many of the calls occurred when the bar was not even open and are only associated with his establishment because of its location.
